Youth Leadership Program Kicks Off At Slippery Rock University

On October 16, the second class of Butler County Youth Leadership program kicked off at Slippery Rock University, for the first in a four-part series, aimed at developing the leadership potential of area high school juniors. After a warm welcome from Slippery Rock University President Dr. William Behre, students from six area school districts participated in leadership development activities, led by Erin Strain, Director, Carolyn Davis, Lead Facilitator and Tyler Loux, Student Facilitator, of Slippery Rock University’s Leadership Development Center. The first day was designed to allow students to begin to get to know each other, explore their vision of leadership and identify their personal leadership style. Using the True Colors assessment, facilitated by Megan Miller, a graduate assistant in the Center for Student Engagement and Leadership, they were able to identify their strengths and how to work with those that have different styles. This assessment also identifies ways to better communicate, by understanding how others respond to different leadership styles. As part of the program, the students will be participating in a volunteer activity through a local nonprofit organization. The next session will be on November 13 focusing on Personal Branding and Networking. Hosted by Butler County Community College, topics covered will include Social Media, Time Management and Body Language. The students will participate in an “etiquette lunch” at the Butler Country Club led by Michelle Jamieson from BC3. Following campus tours, John and Kelly Giles from Future POS will discuss “branding” and entrepreneurial success.
