The Butler County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors invites you to ‘celebrate business’ on Wednesday, September 13, 2017, at the Chamber’s ‘Celebrate Business’ Annual Dinner at the Robert M. Smith Student Center on the campus of Slippery Rock University. The event will recognize the accomplishments of local businesses and highlight the activities of the Chamber, our programs and our volunteers. The evening begins at 5:30 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres cocktail party (microbrews courtesy of North Country Brewing Company) and continues with dinner and award presentations. The culinary staff at Slippery Rock Dining Services (AVI Food Systems) has promised a wonderful display of gourmet delicacies.

The Butler County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Merril Moses, Moses Jewelers, has been selected as the William A. Morgan, Jr. Entrepreneur of the Year 2017. In 1945, Merril Moses graduated from high school in the midst of World War II and immediately joined the Navy. After serving, he returned to his hometown to decide on a career. Using funds provided by the GI Bill, he attended West Penn Horological School of Watchmaking in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and graduated in 1948. In 1949, in a small store no larger than 12 X 15 feet, Merril began in the jewelry business as a watchmaker in Lyndora, Pennsylvania. With the commitment to provide customers with quality, value, personal service and trust, a strong foundation was laid; and Merril’s business prospered. In 1968, after 19 years in such a cramped space, Merril made the decision to move Moses Jewelers to downtown Butler at 115 West Cunningham Street. After that relocation, the business really exploded with locations at the Clearview Mall and Seven Fields. Merril’s wife, Jane, and all of their six children worked in the business at one time or another. Tim Moses served as Chair of the Butler County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors in 2003.

The Entrepreneur of the Year Award is presented to an outstanding local business owner and is recommended by the Chamber’s Past President’s Advisory Council along with past award recipients. Past recipients include Lisa Guard, Nadine Tripodi, John Giles, Joe Gray, Bob McCafferty, Tom Graham, David Lloyd, Richard Musko, William McCarrier, N. Lee Ligo and Matthew Diehl.

Each year, the Butler County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and Past Presidents/Board Chairs, selects a business in Butler County to receive the Award of “Business Champion” which is presented at our annual dinner. Selection is based on the following criteria: Unique Initiatives, Investment in Butler County, Innovative Approaches, People Philosophy/Employee Commitment, Recognition/Awards and Future Plans.

This year, we have selected Thompson-Miller Funeral Home as the 2017 Butler County Chamber of Commerce “Business Champion”. The Thompson Funeral Home was founded by the Thompson brothers, R. Glenn Thompson and Dean D. Thompson in 1927. The original location was on West Jefferson Street. In 1933, the brothers purchased the Koch Family residence at the corner of McKean and North Street. Following necessary renovation to accommodate a home for funerals, it was dedicated to the “Glory of God” and given to the Butler community to provide comfort and warmth at their time of the loss of a loved one. In 1947, Glenn became the sole owner of the Thompson Funeral Home. In 1963 Mr. Thompson invited his son-in-law, Richard J. Miller to become a partner in the business. The name then became Thompson-Miller Funeral Home. In 1973 the funeral home became incorporated, which permanently entitled the business to be known as the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home. Since 1975 many changes and renovations have occurred to update the interior and exterior of the funeral home.

As a family owned and operated funeral home, their entire focus is to help families celebrate a life and mourn the loss of someone loved. They continue to have a longstanding membership since 1931 with the Selected Independent Funeral Homes (SIFH), an international association of independent funeral directors who have met and continue to maintain exacting standards of funeral service. Congratulations to Thompson-Miller Funeral Home as the 2017 Chamber Business Champion.
